About the Role

As Engineering Director (Full Stack), you’ll oversee multiple cross-functional engineering teams, ensuring alignment between technology and business goals. You’ll collaborate with executive leadership, product teams, and engineering managers to drive innovation, cultivate a high-performance culture, and deliver operational excellence at scale.

This role suits a visionary leader who thrives on setting long-term tech strategy, optimising delivery, and mentoring senior technical leaders across the stack.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and implement full-stack engineering strategy aligned with business goals.
  • Lead and scale multiple engineering teams across front-end and back-end development.
  • Oversee architecture for scalability, security, and maintainability.
  • Advise executive leadership on technology trends and strategic investments.
  • Cultivate a culture of engineering excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Own hiring, staffing, performance reviews, and talent development within engineering.
  • Drive adoption of best practices in software development, security, and monitoring.
  • Lead large-scale technical initiatives such as API gateway replacement, data archiving, and platform scalability.
  • Balance technical debt management with innovation.
  • Promote modern engineering practices to enhance developer productivity and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with product teams on prioritising technology initiatives.
  • Mentor engineering managers and senior technical leaders.

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, primarily in full-stack development.
  • 6+ years of engineering leadership experience, managing multiple teams or 50+ engineers.
  • Proven experience with large-scale, distributed systems.
  • Expertise in system architecture and design using Java 19, Spring Boot 3, REST APIs, and microservices.
  • Front-end expertise with React and Next.js.
  • Experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
  • Strong alignment of business objectives with technical strategy.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (Upper-Intermediate+).
  • Experience with incident response, monitoring tools, and security practices.
  • Successful track record of scaling engineering teams and delivering innovation.
  • Strategic mindset with a focus on high-impact execution.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Ebean ORM, Protobuf, and tools like Kibana, Grafana, Sentry, DataDog, PagerDuty.
